Eureka, With boring stimulus (most recent match at LTM end) being reacted to before novel stimuli and before checking what to attend to, I get the pattern I wanted, attempting repeats that are 1 then 2, then 3, then 4 long etc. rather than the progression of 1, 2, 4, 8 etc.
