The * means it is a reflexive reaction to boredom. It tries responding to single A’s then to 2 A’s, then to 3 A’s, then to 4 A’s etc. I call this the A1 problem because at location 4 and 5 it has stored an A and 1 which gets recognized as 3 A’s later on. If it had not stored the A at 4 and stored a 1 instead it would progressively recognized 2 A’s, 4 A’s, 8 A’s etc.
